20/03/2024SonarMix 036: VHOOR - A user’s guide to baile funk
The tracklist for SonarMix 036 takes you to parts of SoundCloud you didn’t even know existed. Guided by VHOOR, this edition of SonarMix takes a trip through Brazil’s baile funk underground, one of the most radically creative scenes in the world right now.
Ahead of his appearance at Sónar Lisboa as part of the Enchufada showcase on Sunday 24th March, the 26-year-old producer and DJ shares some of his favourite current floorfillers, plus a selection of unreleased tracks, edits and flips (his productions, both solo and as part of the Weird Baile collective, make up over half of the tracklist). It’s a user's guide to baile funk, identifying the genre’s roots in old school hip hop and Miami bass, highlighting its unique musical vocabulary, and even showing how it’s infiltrating the mainstream.
A track by Afrika Bambataa collaborator Arthur Baker (as Planet Rock) gives way to the nervous hi-hats and rolling bass of Beyoncé’s ‘America Has A Problem’, which is then blended with the stripped down groove of VHOOR’s own ‘Sensaçao’. The syrupy sound of pre-millennial r&b (Ghost Town DJ’s ‘My Boo’) and Kodak Black’s slurred, lazy raps (here given a percussive flip by Príncipe’s DJ Lycox) fit perfectly alongside one of his productions for baile funk legend MC Bin Laden. And Brazilian superstar Anitta’s version of DJ Pimpa’s manic ‘Movimento da Sanfoninha’ is just as freaky as any of tracks produced by unheralded SoundCloud producers with all-caps names like DJ WIUZIN DO 085
“I hope you like it,” is all he told us. After the final triumphant blast of ‘Se Ta Solteira’, a slice of booming Miami bass featuring rapper FBC, the only thing we want to do is hit play again.  Tracklist:Mosca - Cedar Wood State (Volt Mix)Maffalda - Sensual Mandela
