Magupi, also known as Márcio Pinto, is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer who studied classical guitar, drums and percussion in Porto. He joined various musical groups such as the Porto Symphony Orchestra, the collective Semente/Escola Sementinha, and the band Terrakota. As a result of absorbing the environments he was exposed to, he became a virtuoso marimba percussionist and composer. In 2017 he created the Magupi project, centred on the balafon, a traditional West African xylophone, accompanied by beats and melodies taken from electronic music. In 2019, he released his first EP, Botanas, on the Shika Shika label, and since then his mastery of the marimba has resonated globally. Currently, he focuses on fusing live drum'n'bass with elaborate rhythms. At Sónar Lisboa 2024 we can expect an immersive experience, where Magupi will perform live, accompanied by a drummer and bassist.
