Hátia
‘Hátia’ is born from imagining how a dancer’s choreography could be explored from the inside-out, using cutting-edge scientific and creative technology developed by renowned international creative studio Satore.
Bringing together dance, music and state-of-the-art technology, the installation takes the form of a quadriptych display of four projections of the same choreographed piece. The dance itself is a mix of styles - incorporating ballet, Portuguese Vira and Mexican traditions - which has been recorded on film, as well as via motion and volumetric capture technology. While motion capture translates movement into computer-generated animations, volumetric capture records changes in the space around the dancer, inverting the process.
The music used is inspired by two rivers, Portugal’s Tejo, and the Rio Grande which separates Mexico from the United States. Taking liberally from Mexican song and Portuguese fado, it is dusted with the melancholy that inhabits the fabric of these two countries, born from stories of love, loss and migration.
The installation will be activated by a physical dancer, who will be illuminated with a third projection, based on a medical EEG scan of her brain, which represents her brainwave patterns during the choreography. Tupac is a resident at the Champalimaud Research Center, and have used medical technology to scan the dancer’s body and brain, building up an ‘inside-out’ picture of how a dancer imagines choreography.
